Your 2026 Guide to Rodeo Houston

A Local’s Look at One of Houston’s Biggest Traditions

If you’re new to Houston — or even if you’ve lived here for years — there’s one event that truly defines springtime in our city: Rodeo Houston.

From March 2–22, 2026, NRG Park will transform into a celebration of Texas heritage, community, music, food, and philanthropy. And while the boots and concerts get the headlines, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is so much more than that.

As your local experts here at Energy Realty, we love sharing the traditions that make Houston feel like home. So here’s your exclusive insider’s guide to Rodeo season.

A Brief History: More Than Just a Rodeo

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo began in 1932 with a mission to promote agriculture and support local students.

Today, it’s the largest livestock exhibition and rodeo in the world, welcoming more than 2 million visitors each year and raising millions of dollars annually for educational scholarships. Since 1932, more than $630 million has been awarded to Texas youth.

That’s right: beyond the concerts and carnival lights, Rodeo Houston is one of the largest scholarship providers in the country. It’s a celebration of Western heritage and a powerful force for opportunity in our community.

It’s Houston at its best — big, bold, and deeply rooted in giving back.

The Prelude: Rodeo Events Before Opening Night

Seasoned Houstonians know — Rodeo doesn’t just start on March 2. The festivities begin well before the first concert.

🍷 Rodeo Uncorked! Roundup & Best Bites Competition

This beloved event pairs award-winning wines from the International Wine Competition with bites from some of Houston’s top restaurants.

It’s a foodie favorite and a reminder that Houston’s culinary scene is as diverse and dynamic as its population.

🔥 World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest

Think of this as the Rodeo pregame. The World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest is a cutthroat, invitation-only cooking competition. The winners of this competition are truly the best of the best.

Held just before the official start of Rodeo Houston, this contest builds the hype and sets the tone for what’s to come. For three smoky, high-energy days, NRG Park fills with private tents, live music, good beer, and some of the most serious brisket bragging rights in Texas.

It’s part competition, part celebration — and fully Texas. If you’re lucky enough to score a tent invite, you’ll understand why so many Houstonians say Rodeo season really starts here.

🤠 Go Texan Day

If the BBQ Cook-Off builds anticipation, Go Texan Day is the citywide signal that Rodeo season has officially arrived.

Celebrated just before opening day, Go Texan Day invites everyone across Houston to wear their Western best — boots, hats, denim, and all. Offices participate. Schools participate. Local businesses participate (yes, including us!).

It’s considered the unofficial kickoff to Rodeo Houston, and it’s one of our favorite traditions because the entire city joins in.

For one day, Houston collectively leans into its Western roots — and the excitement carries straight into opening night at NRG Stadium.

It’s Houston’s way of collectively saying, “Let’s Rodeo!”

What to Expect During Rodeo Houston

If you’ve never been, here’s what you’ll find inside NRG Park from March 2–22, 2026:

🐂 Rodeo Competitions

Professional rodeo events include:

  • Bull riding
  • Barrel racing
  • Steer wrestling
  • Saddle bronc riding
  • Tie-down roping
  • Team roping

Each evening performance combines rodeo action with a headlining concert inside NRG Stadium.

🎶 The Concert Series

From country legends to pop superstars to Latin and rap icons, Rodeo Houston’s concert lineup is one of the most diverse in the country.

This year’s star-spangled lineup includes world-renowned artists such as J Balvin, Rascal Flatts, Lizzo, Luke Bryan, Creed, Chris Stapleton, Shaboozey, Kelly Clarkson, Lainey Wilson, Pepe Aguilar, and so. many. more!

For many Houstonians, this is their favorite way to experience live music all year.

🎡 The Carnival

Think classic fair rides glowing against the night sky, midway games filled with laughter, and the smell of fried Oreos and funnel cakes drifting through the air. As the sun sets and the lights come on, the carnival takes on that unmistakable Texas-sized magic — warm spring nights, music in the background, kids clutching oversized stuffed animals, and families making memories between rides.

It’s pure Rodeo season joy — perfect for families, date nights, or anyone who still believes life is a little better with powdered sugar on top.

🐖 Livestock Show

The true heart of Rodeo Houston. Students from across Texas step into the spotlight to showcase the animals they’ve raised. The early mornings, long days, and months of hard work all leading to this moment. You’ll see young cowboys and cowgirls standing tall beside their livestock, boots dusty, hats tipped just right, carrying on a tradition that runs generations deep.

They’re not just competing for ribbons — they’re earning scholarships, building confidence, and representing the agricultural roots that still shape our great state. It’s Texas pride on full display, and a powerful reminder that while Houston is one of the largest cities in the country, its heart still beats with small-town values, hard work, and big dreams.

🛍️ Shopping & Western Expo

From handcrafted boots and custom hats to artisan home décor and one-of-a-kind leather goods, the shopping alone can make the trip worthwhile. The NRG Center transforms into a marketplace filled with rows and rows of local makers, Texas brands, and skilled artisans showcasing their craft. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find something you didn’t know you needed — and feel good knowing you’re supporting small businesses and local talent along the way.

Why Rodeo Season Matters

Rodeo Houston isn’t just an annual festival. It showcases the true heart and soul of Texas.

It impacts local businesses, restaurants, schools, and neighborhoods across the Greater Houston area. It brings visitors from around the country. It boosts tourism. And it strengthens the city’s identity as a place where tradition and innovation live side by side.

For families relocating here, Rodeo season is often one of the first times they truly feel what Houston is all about.

Community. Culture. Connection.

A Local Tip From Us

Plan ahead, plan ahead, plan ahead. Traffic around NRG can — and will be — extremely busy, especially on concert nights and weekends. Consider rideshare or the Metro Rail for an easier experience.

And if you’re new to town? Go at least once. Walk the grounds ’til your feet hurt. Try something fried. Pick a concert and sing and dance the night away. Watch the livestock competitions. Take it allllll in.

It’s one of those experiences that makes Houston feel big AND small at the same time. But that’s what we love about our wonderful city. There’s so much to experience, and many memories waiting to be made. 🧡
