Blooming in Houston

Blooming in Houston

During my years as an expatriate wife, I was fortunate enough to spend a year in Paris. We are given these special opportunities to embrace other cultures and other countries, but sometimes the beauty of the place and opportunities are lost to us because we don’t have the direction to seek them out.

The American Women of Paris started a wonderful symposium and book called “Bloom Where You Are Planted,” which I thought was brilliant. I spent a day learning about some of the things that I could do and learn in Paris, and how best to embrace the city and culture.

I’m going to steal that idea and apply it to Houston—but I will call it “Blooming in Houston.”

This blog is intended to guide you on some of the activities available to you in Houston that will help you to embrace the city and the Houston culture. (I have to tell you that Texas has a culture that is slightly unique to the rest of the United States).

One of the things that you will love about the south is that we have some of the friendliest people on the planet. A true Southerner does not know a stranger. They will talk to anyone and sometimes share their life story in just a few short minutes. It is normal for a southerner to call you “hon” or “darling” and hug you like they have known you for a lifetime. The French may kiss you on the cheek, but a Southerner will sometimes wrap their arms around you, so don’t be surprised.

We will guide you through some of our favorite things to do, some of our favorite places to eat, and some ways to experience the Houston culture. Check in periodically so you don’t miss out!
