Black History Month in Houston: Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Shaping the Future

Black History Month is deeply alive here in Houston.

This city doesn’t just acknowledge Black history — it carries it. It lives in our neighborhoods, in our schools, in our churches, in our small businesses, in our art, in our leadership, and in the very fabric of our culture. From Third Ward to Acres Homes, from historic Freedmen’s Town to the thriving Black-owned businesses shaping our local economy today, Black history has made profound roots in Houston — and those roots continue to shape who we are becoming.

Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the nation, and that diversity is not accidental. It is the result of generations of resilience, courage, sacrifice, brilliance, and unwavering hope. Black History Month is a time to reflect on that legacy — and to recognize that it is not confined to the past. It is happening right now.

At Energy Realty, we believe the best way to serve our community is to truly reflect it. Our team is beautifully diverse, and that diversity directly mirrors the city we love. Because we are not just working in this community.

We are this community.

This month, we’re honored to share reflections from two of our agents, Jasmine Decarlo and Theresa Kialoa — both biracial Black women whose voices, leadership, and presence strengthen our brokerage every day.

Jasmine Decarlo: Carrying Legacy Forward

For Jasmine, Black History Month is personal — foundational, even.

She shares:

“Black History Month isn’t just a chapter; it’s the foundation. For me, this month is deeply personal. I was raised by a single Black woman, and everything I am—my strength, my drive, my resilience—is because of her and the family who came before her. It’s about honoring the brilliance, courage, and sacrifices of Black Americans that history tried to overlook but could never erase. It’s about slowing down, recognizing how much was built, how much was sacrificed, and how much strength it took just to be seen. Here in Houston, Black history is still very much alive. It lives in our neighborhoods, it lives in our culture, and it lives in our businesses. … Black excellence isn’t just history, it’s happening right now, and it deserves to be supported, celebrated, and protected. As a biracial Black woman in business, my heritage is my strength. It shapes how I show up, how I lead, and how I honor those who come before me, by creating space for those who come after. This monthand every monthwe remember, we uplift, and we carry that legacy moving forward.

Jasmine’s words remind us that Black history is not a distant memory — it is ongoing, ever-evolving. It lives in leadership, in entrepreneurship, in motherhood, in mentorship, and in everyday excellence.

Her commitment to creating space for those who come after her reflects something we deeply value at Energy Realty: legacy. Real estate is not just about property. It’s about opportunity. It’s about generational wealth. It’s about stability and community building. And when we understand the weight and history behind access to those opportunities, we serve with deeper purpose.

Theresa Kialoa: Meant to Shine

For Theresa, Black History Month is rooted in gratitude, reflection, and recognizing the strength that allows her to thrive today.

She shares:

“Black History Month, for me, is a month of gratitude. It’s gratitude and honoring those that came before us, that laid the foundation for us… For me as a multiracial Black woman, it’s also recognizing the parts of me that weren’t always clear or understood. And so this month, we take the time to really celebrate and honor our ancestors that came before us that marched, prayed, and really fought for us to have a brighter future. It’s a time for us to reflect on all that has transpired and given us an opportunity to shine. When I think of the word ‘shine,’ it makes me think of the strength that our ancestors have embedded in us and give us the opportunity to thrive today. It’s about embracing and honoring our heritage. … And it’s about celebrating our nobility and our excellence. …This is our opportunity to shine and remember that we weren’t just born in the light. We were meant to shine. Happy Black History Month!”

Theresa’s reflection captures something powerful: Black History Month is not only about remembrance — it is about recognition. Recognition of heritage. Recognition of resilience. Recognition of excellence. And recognition of the light that has always been there.

Celebrating Diversity as a Strength

At Energy Realty, diversity is not a tagline — it is a lived reality.

Our team reflects Houston because we are Houston. We serve clients from every background, culture, and story because our agents bring their full stories into the work they do. That lived experience allows us to listen better. Advocate better. Understand better.

When clients trust us with one of the most important decisions of their lives, they deserve a team that understands the community from the inside out.

That is how we best serve.

By honoring heritage.
By celebrating excellence.
By supporting Black-owned businesses.
By uplifting the voices within our own team.
And by recognizing that representation is not symbolic; it is powerful.

This Black History Month, we celebrate the legacy that built Houston, the leaders who continue shaping it, and the brilliance that shines within our own brokerage.

Because when our team reflects the diversity of our city, we don’t just work here.

We belong here.

Happy Black History Month, from all of us at Energy Realty.
